Types of Networking Events Actually Worth Your Time

Networking events can play a crucial role in your business success. But not all networking events are created equal. So, how do you work out which ones are worth your time?

You know you need to get into networking in order to grow your business and in person events are coming back in a big way, but if you are not a seasoned networker, it can be difficult to put yourself and your business out there.

Yes, there are people who relish the idea of talking to a group of strangers, but for most of us, it can be quite daunting, especially when you are talking about something as precious as your own business.

Here are my top picks for networking events that are actually worth your time:

Industry Specific Events

These events are not only a great way to network with others in your industry, they are also a fantastic opportunity to learn. They often have speakers that are experts in a certain topic relevant to your field. You can take advantage of learning about the specific topic of the speakers and even implementing some change in your business.

You could even offer to be the guest speaker at one of these events. You will be able to connect with every attendee and they will want to speak with you afterwards, making that awkward start of conversation so much easier.

Sundowner Functions

These kinds of events are usually a lot less formal. Lots of small group discussion with the added bonus that you can easily switch groups if you feel the need. With some food and a few drinks thrown in, it can help to ease the awkwardness of networking and conversation starters.

If the drinks are flowing, I would caution you against partaking too much. You do still want to maintain your professionalism.

Conferences

Conferences are a great way to meet a wide range of people while attending a variety of events. Many of the other networking events listed in this article can happen inside a Conference as they often run for 1-2 days.

They are often more expensive, so make sure you do your research and are sure that the event will be beneficial.

Speed Networking

A relatively new concept, but a great way to meet lots of people in a short space of time. Perfect for practicing your elevator pitch as you only have limited time to talk to each person.

You do often have the chance to go back and speak with people that you would like to connect further with, but if not, make sure you grab a business card so you can at least get in touch in future.

Workshops

Workshops are often centered around education on a particular topic, however, there is also the chance for some networking at these events. Because workshops are centered around the learning aspect, they can help to calm any nervousness around networking. It takes the pressure away from the need to make connections while still being able to spread the word about your business.

Business Group Events

Does your local area have a Business Association or Chamber of Commerce. These types of organizations often host networking events. They can be a great way to meet people from a variety of industries that are all local to your area. Take a look at their website or follow their social media to find out when they are holding events. Quite often they will let you attend your first event for free so you can see if you would like to join their association.

Networking events can be a great way to broaden your circle of contacts and help you grow your business. Remember to think about what you want to get out of the event so that you can choose the right event for you. You may need to try a few different types of events before you find the ones you are most comfortable with, but once you start, you will find it much easier to keep going.
