Think Outside The Box

“Think outside the box”- it is such a common catchphrase that is has become a cliché.

It is said to inspire us to think differently or creatively. For some business owners it can be natural to always push their thinking beyond the usual, for others it can take a little effort. We are creatures of habit and most of us prefer the comfort of the metaphorical box. Thinking outside the box can meal challenging beliefs and systems.

But, what does it actually mean? And when it doesn’t come naturally, how do we cultivate the ability to look at things differently?

What it means

Thinking outside the box is to look further than the obvious. It means that you are considering different solutions to reach your goals. It means you won’t necessarily take the usual road, but instead, find your own way there.

It allows you to grow and change, expanding your view on the world and giving you greater perspective.

How you can Think Outside the Box

It can take extra effort to not get stuck on old ways, especially when they work. Firstly, you have to recognize that you can be creative. Then try the few ideas below to get the creativity flowing and start thinking outside the box.

Be Open to Possibilities

Remember that nothing is set in stone. Be adaptable and aware of the opportunities presenting themselves to you. We are creatures of habit and are usually not even aware of the habits we have created. Stop resisting change and question why things are done the way they are.

Brainstorm all your ideas without judgement. There is no such thing as a bad idea when you are trying to think outside the box. Stop thinking that things need to be in order of steps or priority and just get it all out. Ask yourself why, why are things done this way? Keep asking why as it may reveal some flaws in the system and make way for creative thinking.

Look to Other Industries

Question the status quo in your own industry by looking to what other industries are doing. Research what other industries are doing. Look at how modern companies are upping their game, using new technologies. Think of different ways you can apply things from other industries into your own, modified for your industry and your brand. You will find that companies in other industries will be having similar issues as your own, however, they may have found some innovative ways of dealing with them. Remember, just because something has always been done a certain way in your industry, does not mean there is not a better way.

Look to Others

Ask for feedback. Your employees are a great place to start. They may have some great ideas, but without a platform to express them, they feel like they cannot voice their ideas. Ensure you have a system set up to listen to your employees. They are usually the frontline of your business and may have some imaginative ways of dealing with your common issues.

You could also look externally for feedback and advice. Bounce your ideas off someone you trust and gauge their reaction. If you find that they are asking more questions, you may have found a great idea. Ask your customers for feedback, they may have a different background that can bring a different perspective.

Knowledge is Power

Learn. And not just about your current problem or issue. A lifelong learner has a better ability to think outside the box. They are more likely to draw from knowledge or experience in different areas to come up with solutions to problems in their business. Read a book, study, learn a new topic. It will give you a different perspective.

Be creative

The point of thinking outside the box is to think creatively, so create. Draw, write, make something with your hands, turn the problem on it’s head, literally if you need to. Shake things up and see if the ideas start flowing. Being creative also helps with getting out of your own head.

Get out of your own head

You get all your great ideas in the shower, or on a walk, so why not get away from the problem you are trying to solve. Take the dog for a walk, read a book, the best ideas can come when you are relaxed. Change up your environment. If you have been working long hours at your office, get outside, go sit in a café, even go home for a while. Take a break from working on it and let your brain work it out in the background. You might find a great idea is just waiting for your mind to stop scrambling so it can make an appearance.

Think outside the box to find a different path and let it lead you to a different outcome. The most innovative solutions tend to come from businesses that dared to step off the path, challenged assumptions and explored the bigger picture.
