Our internal dialogue dictates how we react to life and situations. So how do you know when to trust the voice in your head?

Everyone has a voice in their head, but you can’t always believe everything you think.

So how do you change the script in your own head?

Positive Self-talk

Quite often our own thoughts can be quite negative, so we need to have some positive self-talk to counteract them and find the truth.

Positive self-talk can seem like something only really positive, bubbly people do to pretend like everything in life is perfect, however, it is more about speaking to yourself with the same grace and compassion that you would a friend, partner or even your children.

Think about the way you talk to yourself sometimes; would you really say that to someone you care about. What would you tell them if they voiced the same thoughts that you are having?

Positive self-talk is more about looking at the circumstances and all its components, rather than just those that your mind focusses on. It is about recognizing the truth in situations and yourself.

Positive Affirmations

Positive Affirmations are a great way to see past your current situation and propel your life forward. However, they can seem a bit silly or even ineffective when we have a lot of negative self-talk trying to sabotage our affirmation.

If you have trouble with positive affirmations, try changing them slightly to admit that you are a work in progress. For example, instead of saying “I am wealthy” and that little voice coming back to you with “No, you’re not”, try saying something like “I am creating more wealth”. A simple change in the statement, while it remains positive, is a lot harder for that voice in your head to negate.

Acknowledgement

Acknowledgement of how far you have already come is a great way to see the truth in a situation. You may not be where you want to be just yet, but you are probably further along than you realise. Acknowledge how far you have come, how much you have changed and grown.

You can also track your progress forward. Focus on where you are going and the positive motion that you and your life are improving.

Keep learning, keep working on yourself, keep improving and you will find the benefits extend far beyond feeling better about yourself. It won’t happen overnight and you may struggle with old habits and beliefs, but it is worth the work. Positive self-talk is linked to better health, improved relationships, increased confidence, less stress and a greater ability to deal with crisis situations.
